At the recently concluded 2018 North American Orienteering Championships, CascadeOC members Eric Bone, Tori Borish, Kelsey Breseman, Siri Christopherson, Tyra Christopherson, Jessica Colleran, Will Enger, Peteris Ledins, and Kai Mihata helped Team USA defeat Team Canada in both the senior and junior competitions. The Senior National Team reclaimed the Björn Kjellström Cup (won by Canada at the last NAOC in 2016), while the Junior National Team successfully defended the Future Champions Cup. Well done, all!
The Björn Kjellström Cup has been awarded every two years since 1980, while the Future Champions Cup was inaugurated in 2012. The trophies will be next awarded at NAOC 2020, which will take place in the beautiful Truckee/Tahoe area!

The biennial North American Orienteering Championships (NAOC) are always the most momentous orienteering event on the calendar, on the whole continent. This year, NAOC is being held in and around Whitehorse, Yukon from August 17-21, and is also being coupled with the subsequent Canadian Orienteering Championships (August 21-24) for a full week of excellent orienteering.
The event is drawing orienteers from all over Canada, the USA, and the world, including Australia, Austria, Belarus, Czechia, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Norway, New Zealand, Portugal, Sweden, and Switzerland. There will also be about 20 CascadeOC members attending! You can follow the proceedings on Twitter, @CascadeOC and @naoc2018.

This year’s Choose Your Adventure Series kicks off this weekend with SummerFEST in Lakewood! Registration for the entire series is now open.
Many popular events are returning again this year: SummerFEST, Corn Maze, and Vampire-O! We’re also adding two campus events, our Back to School event in September and Founder’s Day in October (originally scheduled for Woodland Park, but moved due to conflict). The Founder’s Day event will have a Choose Your Adventure twist of a “dog bones” style course design!
And finally, we’re adding The Bog Slog to the Choose Your Adventure Series this year, since it was often overlooked from a planning standpoint. We’ll offer both styles of race: the point-to-point Bog Slog (long and short advanced), and a standard Choose Your Adventure format (for beginners and intermediates).

This year’s Pig War Challenge (and Western Canadian O’ Champs) event is coming up July 7 and 8 in Vancouver BC. Cascade is the defending champion and WE NEED YOUR HELP to keep this lovely trophy (created by Sherri Brady) in the US. This year’s event will have 3 parts: sprint and middle courses on Saturday and a long course on Sunday. That’s 3 events in one weekend! The middle and long courses will be on a new map just north of Vancouver, in an area that has been called the “best west coast terrain that we have.” Is it? There’s only one way to find out! Ultimate Orienteer
First, many thanks to those of you who have already volunteered to help out at this weekend’s 2-day event at Fishtrap Lake. We still need volunteers in several key positions, though, so if you haven’t signed up, please consider spending an hour or so to help make this event run smoothly. You’ll also receive volunteer points (which you can use towards meet entry and some o’ gear). We particularly need help with:
- Saturday: start and registration (all shifts)
- Sunday: start (2nd shift), registration, and control pickup
If you can’t decide beforehand, you can always fill in on the day. Just ask the meet director what you can do.

Ultimate Orienteer
The course notes for the Ultimate Orienteer Fishtrap Classic events are posted. Please read them as they contain lots of useful information.
If you have not yet registered but are thinking about it, please pre-register early if you can. Since this is a far-away event, we need to get the maps printed earlier than usual and your early pre-registration helps us a lot. While you are at the registration site, please consider signing up for a volunteer shift since we still need many more volunteers.

National events
COC sent a huge contingent of 33 athletes to Junior Nationals at Mount Tom in Holyoke, Massachusetts. COC’s Zariah Zosel won first place in the middle school girls category. We also had five second-place individual finishes: Tyra Christopherson for intercollegiate women, Siri Christopherson for high school varsity girls, Zoe Sibthorp for junior varsity girls, Jack Bruneel for junior varsity boys, and Peter Campbell for elementary boys. COC teams finished second and third in the junior varsity club category (pictured above), and the Overlake School finished third in the high school varsity category. Results of the competition are available here.
