South Seattle College

Sitting atop the east side of the West Seattle plateau, South Seattle College features a dense college campus, parkland with scattered trees, an arboretum with a maze of trails, and a forested old quarry with a small trail network.

The purpose of providing these navigational and physical ratings below is to provide greater context for how challenging an orienteering course at this venue might be. For example, an advanced-level course at a local city park will be easier to complete than an advanced-level course in the mountains.

Navigational Challenge Rating: 3/10

This venue has a mix of urban campus with moderate complexity, open parklands, and a densely forested old quarry with a sparse trail network.

Physical Challenge Rating: 2/10

The campus is essentially flat, but there are steep retaining walls down to 16th Ave SW. The old quarry area is about 20m below the campus elevation, so the trails there will require some descent and climb.

FROM DOWNTOWN SEATTLE (and all points north)

Take I-5 South.
Take exit 163A for West Seattle Bridge.
Exit on Delridge Way SW.
Turn left on Oregon Street, continue on to 23rd Ave SW.
Follow the arterial (23rd Ave becomes 22nd Ave which becomes 21st Ave which becomes Dawson St which becomes 16th Ave)
Turn left into South Seattle College.

FROM TUKWILA (and all points south)

Take I-5 north toWA- 599, which becomes 99, which becomes W Marginal Way, which becomes Highland Park Way SW.
Follow Highland Park Way SW to the west, then the south up the hill.
Turn right on SW Holden St (no stoplight here).
Turn right on 16th Ave SW.
South Seattle College will be on your right.
